Alzheimer's Care

Information about Alzheimer's disease

A SPECIAL PLACE

The Wesleyan Homes Alzheimer’s Care Center provides a supportive environment for persons suffering with Alzheimer’s disease to receive the special services and treatment they need.

The design of the care center utilizes many new innovations. Resident rooms are designed in two clusters, each servicing 20 residents. Each resident accommodation has a window with a beautiful view. The resident rooms open out on a residential style living area. Residents have their meals served in this residential setting, rather than a large dining room. By providing this special facility design, the transition from a home setting to the Care Center is made much easier. Spacious living areas and their adjoining sun rooms offer the restless Alzheimer’s patient plenty of room to walk. In addition to other landscaping, three outside courtyards are included in the design. These courtyards allow residents to enjoy fresh air and the beauty of the grounds, while remaining in a secure environment.
The central part of the facility is a multipurpose Community Center. This area is the center of all resident activities.
By design, the Community Center is the bridge between the two residential clusters. This design offers the flexibility staff needs to tailor treatment plans to each resident by maintaining both quiet areas and active areas during the day. The Community Center contains areas for music, crafts, small group activities, exercise classes and religious services.
Specialized programs provide a higher quality of life for these special residents. The Care Center also gives family members of Alzheimer’s patients the peace of mind that comes from knowing their loved one is receiving care tailored to their special needs.

INFORMATION...

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, degenerative disease that attacks the brain and results in impaired memory, thinking, and behavior. Persons affected by the disease experience a gradual loss of memory, decline in the ability to perform routine tasks, disorientation in time and space, difficulty in learning, and the loss of language and communication skills. The disease gradually strips away mental and physical abilities, eventually rendering sufferers incapable of caring for themselves.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementing illness, affecting approximately 4 million Americans. It is the fourth leading cause of death among adults, taking more than 100,000 lives annually. Approximately 10 percent of the population over age 65 is afflicted with the disease. The proportion rises to 47.2 percent in those over age 85.
The impact of Alzheimer’s disease extends beyond the patient. The caregiver, usually a spouse or other family member, becomes the second victim. Persons with Alzheimer’s disease often require 24 hour care and supervision. This need for constant care often creates a demand that the caregiver can not meet. At some point in the course of the disease, families must turn to an outside facility to provide the level of care that is needed. However, this transition from a residential, home environment to a large-scale group living situation can be stressful for anyone and is often especially so for persons with Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s patients are easily overwhelmed by a complex and unfamiliar environment, and may experience confusion, frustration, and feelings of helplessness. They are often removed from their everyday social support network of family and friends, and their normal daily routine.
A facility specifically designed for Alzheimer’s patients can make this transition from home to nursing facility much easier for the patient and the family member.
